What is Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis?

Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic Methods are fluid exercise practices based on the seven natural spinal movements: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist, and circular. It’s a whole body workout!


Gyrotonic Method

The GYROTONIC ® Method utilizes specialized equipment to guide, assist, and challenge the exerciser. It incorporates an original movement system that addresses the whole body by increasing range of motion, improving strength and endurance, stimulating the nervous system and creating efficiency of movement patterns.

How does it work?

These methods work the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements coupled with breathing patterns. The exercises stimulate the body’s internal organs while corresponding breathing patterns stimulate the nervous system, opening up energy pathways and oxygenating the blood.


Gyrokinesis Method

The GYROKINESIS® Method is practiced on a mat and chair, without equipment. This method allows participants to be more dependent on their own proprioception to explore movement sequences as opposed to relying on the feedback and guidance of equipment. Rhythm is used to coordinate movement, breath and mental focus.

About Me

Hi, I’m Mary! I’ve been practising the Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis methods myself for over 12 years now. After enjoying the exercises so much personally, I decided to become a fully qualified teacher for both methods, which I’ve now been doing for the past 10 years. 

A wide variety of people take my Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis classes, including accomplished athletes, senior citizens, fitness enthusiasts, and those recovering from an injury. Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis exercises can help everyone to improve their functional movement, and they assist with providing rehabilitation for clients  recovering from injuries too.

The reason I started to teach these methods after working for so many years teaching Pilates is that they all complement each other – each one of the practices can help the body to open up, allowing you to gain more from the other practice.
